How Much Does a Resin Bound Driveway Cost? The Ultimate Irish Pricing Guide

Thinking about upgrading your home’s kerb appeal with a sleek, seamless, and weed-free surface? A premium resin bound driveway is one of the best investments you can make for your property. But before diving in, the biggest question on every Irish homeowner's mind is: What is the actual cost?

Let's break down the real numbers, the crucial role of your driveway's foundation (the sub-base), and what drives the final price tag.

1. The Quick Numbers: Cost Per Square Metre

In Ireland, a professionally installed resin bound driveway typically ranges from €70 to €150 per square metre (€/m²).

Your total investment depends heavily on whether we can overlay an existing surface or if we need to excavate and build a brand-new foundation from scratch.

Estimated Cost Breakdown

Driveway Size

Typical Setup

Option A: Overlay Only (Sound Base)

Option B: Full Excavation & Sub-Base

Small (~20 m²)

1 Car Space / Townhouse

€1,500 – €2,400

€2,800 – €4,500

Medium (~50 m²)

2–3 Cars / Semi-Detached

€3,500 – €5,000

€6,000 – €9,500

Large (90 m²+)

Multi-Car / Country Home

€6,000 – €8,500+

€11,000 – €16,500+

⚠️ Don't Get Confused: Make sure you are getting Resin Bound (smooth, porous, stone-and-resin mix) and not Resin Bonded (a cheap, rough, non-permeable scatter-system where stones easily break loose).

2. The Foundation: Why the Sub-Base Controls the Budget

A resin bound driveway is only as strong as what lies underneath it. Because the top resin layer is standardly laid at just 15mm to 20mm thick, the state of your sub-base dictates your final quote.

  • The Overlay (Lower Cost): If your current concrete or tarmac driveway is structurally flawless with no cracks or sinking, we can clean it, prime it, and lay the resin directly on top. This saves massive amounts on labour and material removal.

  • Full Excavation (Higher Cost): If you are digging up an old lawn, dealing with broken block paving, or soft earth, we must build a multi-layer base. This involves digging down 175mm–250mm, laying compacted MOT Type 1 stone, and adding an open-graded, porous binder course.

🌧️ The Eco-Friendly Bonus: When laid over an open-graded sub-base, the system is fully permeable (SUDS compliant). Rainwater drains directly into the earth, completely eliminating puddles and flash floods without needing planning permission!

3. What Else Drives the Price?

  • UV-Stable vs. Non-UV Resin: Cheap, non-UV resin turns an ugly yellow-brown under sunlight. At Resco.ie, we only use 100% UV-stable aliphatic resin to guarantee your driveway keeps its pristine color forever.

  • Premium Stone Aggregates: As the gold standard for aggregate technology—we use elite, load-tested natural quartz and granites that won't crush under vehicular weight.

  • Edging Borders: Resin requires a solid retaining edge to lock into. If you need new granite sets, brick borders, or aluminium trim installed, it will add to the initial cost.

  • Driveway Shape & Access: Long, winding pathways or tight spaces that require manual wheelbarrowing instead of mechanical mixers will naturally increase labour time.

Is it Worth the Investment?

Absolutely. While gravel migrates, block paving gets overtaken by weeds, and concrete cracks in the Irish frost, a resin bound driveway stays pristine. With practically zero maintenance (just an occasional power wash), it delivers a gorgeous, durable entrance built to last 15 to 25 years.
